SALARY: $35,000-40,000

Position Overview

The NoMa Library Assistant serves as a primary point of contact for patrons at the library’s public service desk. This position is primarily responsible for circulation services and high-quality customer support while also assisting with basic reference, technology, and day-to-day library operations.

Working under the supervision of a professional librarian, the Library Assistant helps create a welcoming, inclusive, and efficient environment where all patrons can easily access library collections, technology, and services. This role serves a high volume of patrons in a fast-paced public service environment and ensures materials and resources are accessible to the community.
This position plays an important role in delivering equitable, inclusive, and responsive service to a diverse community while supporting daily library functions.

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Provide excellent customer service at the library’s public service desk by greeting patrons and responding to circulation, reference, and technology questions.
  • Check library materials in and out using the integrated library system (ILS), register new patrons, update accounts, process holds, and collect fees in accordance with library policies.
  • Process new library materials for circulation, including labeling, covering, RFID tagging, shelving preparation, and identifying damaged items for repair or withdrawal.
  • Assist patrons in locating books, media, digital resources, and other library materials, referring complex reference questions to a librarian when appropriate.
  • Provide basic technology assistance, including help with public computers, printing, scanning, copying, Wi-Fi, and the online catalog.
  • Shelve, organize, shelf-read, and maintain library collections to ensure materials are accessible and accurately arranged.
  • Prepare displays, signage, flyers, and promotional materials to support library programs and services.
  • Perform routine clerical duties, including recordkeeping, filing, data entry, and preparing reports.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, safe, and welcoming environment for patrons and staff.
  • Work collaboratively with library staff to provide consistent, high-quality public service and perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: 

  • Strong customer service skills and ability to engage positively with diverse populations.
  • Ability to follow directions, learn new procedures, and adapt to changing needs.
  • Basic computer skills (including familiarity with Windows, Microsoft Office Suite, and navigating email and the internet) and comfort assisting others with technology.
  • Good organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods, lift and move library materials, and perform repetitive tasks such as shelving.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous customer service, clerical, or public-facing experience preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience considered.

This position requires flexibility, including evening and Saturday hours, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, public service environment.
