SALARY: $35,000-40,000

Position Overview

The NoMa Library Assistant is a frontline staff member who provides excellent customer service while primarily supporting and delivering library programming, in addition to circulation and daily public service operations. Working primarily at the information desk, this position is responsible for checking library materials in and out using the integrated library system, assisting patrons with library resources and technology, and supporting the planning and delivery of programs for teens and adults.

Working under the supervision of a professional librarian, the Library Assistant helps create a welcoming, inclusive environment where patrons can access library resources, technology, and lifelong learning opportunities. This role serves a high volume of patrons while balancing multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Provide friendly, responsive customer service at the information desk and assist patrons with circulation, library services, and general inquiries.
  • Check library materials in and out, register new library cardholders, update patron accounts, and process holds using the integrated library system (ILS).
  • Assist patrons in locating library materials and accessing digital resources, referring complex reference questions to a librarian when appropriate.
  • Provide basic technology assistance, including help with public computers, printing, scanning, copying, and Wi-Fi access.
  • Plan, prepare, and conduct engaging library programs for teens and adults, including setting up program spaces and assisting with participant registration.
  • Evaluate program success through attendance, feedback, and participation, and adjust future programming accordingly.
  • Assist with the creation of book displays, promotional materials, flyers, and library signage.
  • Perform routine clerical duties, including recordkeeping, data entry, filing, and preparing reports.
  • Help maintain an organized, clean, safe, and welcoming library environment.
  • Work collaboratively with library staff to ensure consistent public service coverage and successful library programming.
  • Learn and apply library policies, procedures, and best practices while performing other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: 

  • Strong customer service skills and the ability to engage positively with diverse populations.
  • Ability to follow directions, learn new procedures, and adapt to changing needs.
  • Basic computer skills (including familiarity with Windows, Microsoft Office Suite, and navigating email and the internet) and comfort assisting others with technology.
  • Good organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to confidently engage groups and facilitate activities.
  • Ability to manage multiple programs, deadlines, and service responsibilities simultaneously.
  • Ability to set up, move, and organize program materials and equipment as needed.
  • Experience working with youth, families, and diverse community populations preferred.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Previous customer service, clerical, or public-facing experience preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience considered.

This position requires flexibility, including evening and Saturday hours, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, public service environment.
