Position Overview
The NoMa Library Specialist plays a critical role in activating and managing two of the Hub’s most innovative spaces: the Maker Lab and Recording Studio. This hands-on position is responsible for developing programs, maintaining equipment, providing instruction and technical support, and creating educational resources for both patrons and staff. The Specialist helps foster an environment where community members can connect, create, learn, and bring their ideas to life.
The NoMa Library Specialist is a subject matter expert in makerspace technologies and audio production. This role involves overseeing the operation, maintenance, and supervision of the Maker Lab and Recording Studio. The specialist is responsible for managing equipment and technology, developing and delivering instructional programming, supporting patrons and staff, and creating documentation, manuals, and training materials. Additionally, this position ensures the safe, effective, and engaging use of the facilities.
Key Responsibilities:
Makerspace Operations & Programming
- Oversee daily operations of the Maker Lab and manage workflow for patrons and projects.
- Develop and implement makerspace programs, workshops, demonstrations, and special events.
- Assist patrons with makerspace technology, equipment use, project development, and troubleshooting.
- Create and maintain documentation, instructional materials, safety procedures, and operational manuals.
- Operate and maintain a variety of makerspace technologies, including: 3D printers, laser cutters, vacuum former, wide-format Inkjet printer, Interpret CAD files, blueprints, sketches, and project specifications to support patron projects.
- Monitor equipment performance and coordinate maintenance and repairs.
- Manage inventory and submit requests for supplies, materials, and equipment purchases.
- Research emerging technologies and maker trends and recommend equipment upgrades and facility improvements.
- Collaborate with staff and community partners to expand maker-focused learning opportunities.
Recording Studio Operations & Programming
- Plan, manage, and direct activities related to the successful daily operation of the Recording Studio.
- Maintain a welcoming and creative environment that encourages exploration, learning, and collaboration.
- Develop studio policies, procedures, workflows, and strategic goals.
- Provide hands-on instruction and training in: podcast production, music recording, voiceover production, audio editing, operating cameras, mixing and mastering, sound for video and multimedia projects, microphone techniques, and digital distribution and streaming platforms.
- Assist patrons with recording software, hardware, and studio equipment.
- Troubleshoot technical issues and provide individualized support.
- Develop workshops and educational programming related to audio production and digital media creation.
- Support patrons in completing creative projects from concept through final production.

- Commitment to outstanding customer service to diverse learners, creators community engagement of all ages.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree Education, Technology, Media Production, Digital Arts, Engineering, or a related field required.
- Two (2) years of experience working in a makerspace, fabrication lab, recording studio, educational technology environment, library, or related setting; and
- Experience providing instruction, training, or technical support to the public.
This position may require flexibility, including occasional evenings and weekends, and comfort working in a highly collaborative, innovative, and community responsive environment.
