Fast – Easy – Library Take Out
The Wilmington Libraries are providing “take-out” service and more while the buildings are still closed to the public.
Here’s How it Works:
- Place a hold on library material you wish to check out either by calling the library or by going online.
(Library staff can only take 5 hold requests per person)

- Wait for the library system to send you a text, email, or phone call letting you know your materials are ready.
- Once you received notification your items are ready for pick up, come to the the library during our curbside hours.
- Masks are required to be worn when picking up material.
- When you arrive at the library door, give your name to a staff member and we will give you your bag of items.
- You may still check out new materials while your returned items are being quarantined.

Because patrons are not able to browse the library shelves, we are offering a personal shopper service. Let us do the browsing for you!

We know that picking out picture books from an online catalog can be a daunting task, which is why we’ve made the task of picking out picture books for your kids easy!
Simply pick out up to 3 topics and we’ll create bundles for you. See the Youth Service Book Bundle Flyer for topic suggestions. Bundles will include 5 books on each of your topics. Bundles will be available for curbside pickup in 2 business days.
We are also happy to look for other ages groups as well! Just call to inquire

- We will hold your items for 7 days. If you have not claimed them, after 7 days they will be checked back in.
Are there any library resources I can use while branches are closed?
Yes. The Library provides a wide array of digital offerings, including e-books, audiobooks, magazines, and streaming movies. The Library has introduced access to virtual services including access to new eResources such as hoopla, creativebug, and Transparent Language. Visit our Online Services page to learn more.

While our buildings are closed, library staff have worked to create a robust schedule of virtual programs for all ages. Parents with children can find storytimes and other literacy activities, as well as music, motion, arts and crafts, STEM programs, and more. Beginning June 1st, libraries will also be offering access to special performances available to watch via Zoom or Facebook Live. There are also plenty of programs for teens and adults from social meetups, book clubs, health and wellness, financial literacy, and more. What safety precautions are library staff taking?
All staff members are required to wear gloves, a face mask, and will practice safe social distancing from other staff members and members of the public during the Library Take Out Service. Items returned to libraries are quarantined for three days before being checked in.
Do I need to wear a mask?
Anyone picking up materials must wear a mask.
Do I drive up with my car?
The Wilmington Library’s Service is walk-up only. One can drive and park at North Wilmington Branch, but you will need to get out of your car and walk up to the library doors to obtain your material.
How do I place items on hold/reserve?
Beginning June 8, you can place items on hold by calling your local library or using our online library catalog. Once your hold is available, you will be notified. Please refer to the hold pick up notice for the deadline to pick up your items. After that date, your item(s) will be placed back on the shelves.
How many items can I place on hold/reserve?
Each day you call, the staff can place up to 5 items on hold for you. You can place as many online yourself as you want.
How long can I keep checked out materials?
All materials checked out during Curbside Service will be checked out for 30 days or until further notice. Due dates will be extended as needed during Library closure.
I have items checked out right now, when are they due?
The due date for materials currently checked out is extended to July 1. Libraries may extend due dates as needed.
Who can check out items?
Anyone with a valid library card will be able to check out items.
My library card has fines on it. Can I still check out materials?
In most cases, you will be able to check out material even with a fine on your account. Please contact your local library for additional detail.
I don’t have a library card. Can I check out items?
You can apply for a library card online. Once your online application is complete, you will be able to check out materials.
I had items on hold, but I no longer need them, how do I cancel the hold?
Contact your local library to cancel your holds.
How do I renew items?
During library closure, you will not be able to renew your library materials. The Library will continue to extend due dates for items while we remain closed.
My library card expired, how can I renew it?
If your library card has expired, you may renew it online, by logging into your account. If you need additional assistance, you can contact your local library.
I’m not sure what I want. Can you help?
Yes, you can call the library and ask for suggestions or just ask us to choose a selection for you based on genres and reading levels. See the libraries’ personal shopper information above.

Can I return the materials I checked out?
Library book drops will open on June 1. After this date, you can return any library items to any library branch. Please note, returned items are being quarantined for 72 hours before being checked-in and recirculated. Because of this, it may take up to five days for a returned item to appear as “returned” in your account. But don’t worry – there are no fines or late fees right now.
When will libraries reopen?
New Castle County Libraries value and miss our patrons. We are looking forward to the day when we can safely reopen library doors. We are monitoring the situation closely and hope we will be able to begin incrementally resuming additional services soon.
Can I donate books to the library?
Unfortunately, due to the efforts to safely prepare our locations for socially distant services, at this time we are not prepared to accept book donations at any Library location. Please do not leave donations on the curbside pickup table, and do not place donations in the book drops. We will gladly accept donations once again in the future and will make that announcement when ready.
