LONGWOOD GARDENS COMMUNITY READ 2019

  • For Children: The Reason for a Flower – Ruth Heller

    Why do we have flowers? To make seeds, of course! Can a flower weigh as much as a tortoise? How do seeds “travel”? Would a snake eat a seed? Would you eat a seed? With the help of some live and taxidermied animals we will explore the answers to these and other questions and delve into an amazing array of seeds: one as big as your head, a few tinier that sand-grains, and everything in between – even some that smell!  

 

  • For Adults: The Triumph of Seeds: How Grains, Nuts, Kernels, Pulses, & Pips Conquered the Plant Kingdom and Shaped Human History – Thor Hanson 

    • The Role of Seeds in Society and Culture
      Saturday, April 13, 1:00-2:00 PM Jacob Broom Room (2nd Floor)
      Dive deep into the wide range of usages of seeds in today’s society and culture. From their inclusion in global diets to their presence in creative arts, spirituality, and textiles, discover how relevant seeds are in today’s world. Learn how to properly process and store beautiful seeds to be used for jewelry, cooking, and planting.
